This painting shows the Jewish heroine Esther appearing before King Ahasuerus, whose prime minister had hatched a plot to execute all the Jews, to plead for her people. According to the Biblical story, Esther fainted in the king’s presence from fear because going before the king without an invitation was a crime punishable by death.
