Description
A marble statue sculpted during the Hellenistic era, which was orignally done as a copy of a Greek statue. The work was lost for many years but rediscovered, heavily damaged, in a Roman basement in 1907. The piece was aquired by the Metropolitan Museum in 1909 where it was restored and put on display. The statue depicts an old woman with two chickens and a basket of fruit. A common interpretation is that she is an aged cortesan on her way to a festival for Dianysus. This image depicts the Old Market Woman before her restorations were removed.
