Dublin Core

Title

Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga (1784–1792)

Subject

Painted during the Spanish Enlightenment, this is a portrait of the youngest son of the Altamira Family.

Description

In this portrait, Manuel María is depicted wearing a bright red play costume with his pet cats, finches, and magpie holding the Goya's calling card. The boy was about 3 or 4 years old when it was painted, but after its completion, the boy died at age 8. The portrait became famous because of Goya's playful representation of the boy's youth through his pets and playwear in contrast to the crouched cats and dark shadows that give a deathly feeling to the painting.
