Title

The Judgment of Paris

Subject

Portrayal of the Greek myth, "The Judgment of Paris."

Description

Paris, Prince of Troy, determines which goddess - Juno, Minerva, or Aphrodite - is the most beautiful. Each goddess offered Paris an immense gift in exchange for choosing her. Juno offered power, Minerva offered all human knowledge, and Venus offered Paris the love of Helen of Troy, the wife of the King of Sparta. Mercury, shown as an old man, holds a golden apple as the prize - here turned into a glass orb. Cupid points his arrow at Venus, indicating Paris' choice of love. This has massive consequences, as once Paris and Helen become lovers the King of Sparta attacks Troy, kickstarting the infamous Trojan War.
