Title

Marie-Antoinette in a Chemise Dress

Subject

Marie-Antoinette

Description

Vigée Le Brun painted this portrait of Marie-Antoinette, to be displayed in the Salon. Here, Marie-Antoinette wears a white muslin dress and straw hat, which is drastically different from what the Queen would normally wear for portraiture. Although beautiful, this portrayal was deemed inappropriate.
