The Royal Academy
In 1783, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture finally accepted Labille-Guiard. Upon signing into the Academy, Labille-Guiard wrote down “Adélaïde of the Virtues,” as if smirking upon those who spoke ill of her morals. Labille-Guiard would not be smirking much longer, though. Shortly after her induction, the Academy made a declaration. Much to Labille-Guiard’s dismay, the Academy announced they would only allow four women into the Academy at a time. As a teacher, Labille-Guiard was crushed her female students’ had even fewer opportunities to learn their craft.
