Impressionism

Claude Monet, La Grenouillère, 1869.

Impressionist art is characterized by short, broken brushstrokes, unblended, bright colors, and a concentration on the effects of light. Many impressionist artists liked to play around with shadows and highlights while using color, not just simply black, white, and grays. Although these art pieces are carefully constructed, they seem spontaneous and effortless. Most impressionist artists captured the suburban and rural landscape and lifestyle in their work.
