Young Sailor I

Following the purchase of the Villi sculpture and a subsequent trip to Algeria, Matisse painted two portraits of sailor Germain Montargès in 1906. This first portrait, Young Sailor I, Matisse conforms to the fauvist practices of the time, depicting the sailor in milky hues, his cap casting a shadow over his face.
